Failing Saab clutches are easily repaired on the Saab 900, 9-3 and 9-5 series.  It is recommended that a complete Saab clutch kit be purchased that includes the clutch disc, clutch pressure plate, clutch slave cylinder, throw out bearing and the pilot bearing.  Sometimes the pilot bearing must be purchased separately.  I would also recommend that one removes the flywheel and replaces the rear main seal at the same time.  Once you have everything apart, it is a simple matter to remove the flywheel.

Saab Clutch Bleeding

The best way to bleed the clutch is with the use of a pressure bleeder.  Bleeding Saab Clutches with a power bleederThis pressurizes the air over the fluid in the Master Cylinder brake fluid reservoir which in turn supplies the clutch hydraulics as well.  This method also minimizes damage to the clutch master and slave cylinders due to lack of fluid.  This device is also used to bleed the brakes.

Saab Clutch Master and Slave cylinders

Both the master and slave cylinders of the clutch system should be replaced or rebuilt when the clutch is renewed.  If you feel qualified, one can purchase the seal kits and rebuild the cylinders one’s self.  You will need a cylinder hone, snap ring pliers, a knack for taking things apart and reassembling correctly and patience.  The other alternative is to purchase new or rebuilt cylinders that have been professionally manufactured.
